OMG – Ed Beals commented on my blog!

Wow! Ed Beals commented on my blog. I haven’t been this excited since Simon Prebble didn’t comment on my blog!

Don’t know who Ed Beals is? You should!

I fell in love with Ed, or more accurately, with Plickey + Muto, about 6 years ago. I discovered the Plickey + Muto videos killing time when I worked at Microsoft. I laughed, I cried; I was definitely in love. Muto is just so sweet. He’s loyal and sensitive. When he sighs, I just about lose it – I want to reach out and pet him, offer him comfort. Not bad for a pair of antique surgical scissors.

My friend Adam got me the boxer shorts off CafePress and I made a CD with the SWF files I downloaded off the web. I made one copy for me and one for my friend Adam. Ed, I hope you don’t mind! I just needed to be able to watch the videos whenever I wanted. [Speaking of, the links from your page don’t actually seem to link to the vids, or I’m doing something wrong.]
And here’s our own Plickey and Muto. They’ve been in the family for about as long. That’s Plickey on the left.

A Mystery, Read by Simon Prebble?

Filed under: Simon Prebble,Small World — JeniQ @ 1:51 am

So, this is weird and strange and all coinkydental.

On March 18th, I posted a blog about Simon Prebble. I attempted to find contact information online, but was not successful. He has no home page, and he’s not obviously reachable through any of the audio book companies that he’s worked for. I was sad, because I wanted to say Hello.

Then I had a genius idea – I had all his old letters, so I could try sending a card to his old address. Yes, the address is over 10 years old, but heck, you never know, do you? So I wrote out a nice card and placed it in the mail on March 27th, a Tuesday.

I kept expecting it to be returned in the mail, but it had not been returned by Friday so I was getting hopeful. Then, on Monday, April 2nd, I got an anonymous post on my blog that just said

Newton’s Cradle…it’s true

I was ecstatic!! He got my card! He followed the link I included! He answered my Wikiality question! Sure, it was an anonymous post, but the timing, the answered question: it was obviously him.

You might imagine my disappointment/confusion/puzzlement then, when on April 4th I received my letter, returned in the mail.
Who was that mystery poster?

Healthy Dinners

Filed under: Meals & Food — JeniQ @ 10:16 am

I’ve been trying to get away from meat as the center focus of our meals, and one way to do that is to use fish instead. Not always the easiest ingredient to have on hand, I’ve been working on incorporating packaged tuna into dinners.

Here are two recent meals using packaged tuna. I think they were both pretty good.

Tuna mixed with a mixture of olive oil and sesame oil, soy sauce, sesame seeds and salt and pepper, served on a bed of lettuce on top of chopped chilled whole wheat fettucini. I added fresh avocado slices to make it extra tasty. I steamed some baby bok choy and broccoli and tossed it with olive oil and lemon juice. It was yummy!

This is tuna mixed with diced pear and apple, seasoned with a mix of sugar, cayenne and curry. To balance, I steamed/sauteed red potatoes and sliced squash and zuchinni with rosemary and topped with parmesan cheese. Fresh sliced tomatoes and a piece of toasted bread rounded this meal out.

Walking Report: Week 3

Filed under: Exercise — JeniQ @ 10:00 am

Ok, not the best week ever.

Monday – 15 minutes with Dave after work.
Tuesday – No. I had dinner plans at 7:30 and was busy until then.
Wednesday – Yoga, but no walking.
Thursday – It was our Friday night! And I didn’t feel like cooking, so we went out to dinner. So no, we didn’t walk.
Friday – Nope.
Saturday – Heh. No.
Sunday – Um, no. But I did rollerskate for 3 hours!

Fave Song

I love this song. I love how it starts so low, and builds to a crescendo, and then ends slow again. And I love watching him sing it in this clip from the Old Gray Whistle Test. Though I have to question the screen freeze for this clip, who’s idea was that?

Right about 1:59 he starts to look straight into the camera. You can see his snaggleteeth well, and he’s mesmerizing — I like to watch his lips move as they negotiate his pointy canines.
Perhaps I should get a life, but I know Cristin will love it, too!

Five Years (David Bowie)

Pushing thru the market square, so many mothers sighing
News had just come over, we had five years left to cry in
News guy wept and told us, earth was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet, then I knew he was not lying
I heard telephones, opera house, favourite melodies
I saw boys, toys electric irons and T.V.’s
My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there
And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people
And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people
I never thought I’d need so many people

A girl my age went off her head, hit some tiny children
If the black hadn’t a-pulled her off, I think she would have killed them
A soldier with a broken arm, fixed his stare to the wheels of a Cadillac
A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest, and a queer threw up at the sight of that

I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine, don’t think
you knew you were in this song
And it was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor
And I thought of Ma and I wanted to get back there
Your face, your race, the way that you talk
I kiss you, you’re beautiful, I want you to walk

We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, what a surprise
Five years, stuck on my eyes
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
Five years
Five years
Five years
Five years

Sunday Night Rollerskating

Filed under: Roller Skating — JeniQ @ 10:01 am

Jenny came to skating Sunday night, yay!! It was awesome.

Jenny, you left 2 minutes too early! One of those two trick skaters propped himself upside down on his hands and head, tripod style, and put his legs out parallel to the ground in a wide-angle split. Impressive in and of itself. Then his buddy came by and jumped over him!

Here’s some video footage of shuffle skaters in a rink, except we don’t have any obnoxious kids skating around.

Thanks, guys!

Carolina Brewing Company

Filed under: Alcohol — JeniQ @ 10:24 pm

We’ve never been to the Carolina Brewing Company before. I’ve seen Ele’s pics (and these) before, it looks like fun. Tyra and Mike wanted to go, so we made time to go on Saturday to take the brewery tour.

Damn it was crowded. Maybe 150 people, plus a grandma and one gnarly dog. Or was it a gnarly granma?
Tyra and Mike!
Bottler machine!
Dave!
Me and one of the brewers!

Turkey Pot Pies

Filed under: Meals & Food — JeniQ @ 1:02 pm

I was inspired to make turkey pot pies. I had made a bunch of turkey stock last weekend and pulled the leftover turkey bits out of the freezer, along with some cranberry sauce. Here’s what I envisioned – light pasty crusts filled with chopped turkey, diced sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, pearl onions and a heavenly cream sauce, served alongside bright cranberry sauce. Here’s the “Making of.”

Cutting the dough to fit the pie pans.Forming the dough in the pie shells.Sauteing the sweet potato and onions.Mixing the chopped turkey with canned peas and carrots. Whisking the cream sauce at a high boil.
Finished pie pans, with “lids” to the left.
Pie pans filled with turkey, sweet potato, carrots and peas.
Topped with cream sauce.
Putting the lids on the pies.
One hour since I started, they are ready to go into the oven.
Fifteen minutes later, they are out of the oven, nice and brown. The finished product, served with cranberry sauce on the side – it was all very yummy!!

Closet Re-org

Filed under: Household — JeniQ @ 12:53 pm
Friday was a day off for Dave and I. We had planned to work out in the yard all weekend, but several things came up to throw us off our game.

First, Tyra and Mike invited us to the Carolina Brewing Company for their free beer tour. How could we say no? Then, the weather turned cold and I said no to working outside in these temperatures.
Instead, we spent Friday cleaning out our bedroom closet. Dave found lots of stuff to give away, and so did I. We cleaned and reorganized the whole thing. I even moved my sweaters to the back of my closet. Here’s my shelf now:
