Friday Night Out
Dave and I decided at the last minute on Friday to go see The Golden Compass. What a good movie – fun, entertaining, creative, scary, sweet, etc. And pretty violent, so think twice before taking the kiddies to see it. There seems to be a lot of controversy surrounding this movie. Being pretty open to new ideas and not being particularly religious, I don’t get it. So I have no opinion to add. Instead I’ll share with you Thomas’s thoughts on the matter – he seems pretty sensible.
Afterwards, we hit the Lynnwood Grill for beers. Can you believe there was a wait? But we didn’t have to wait because Mom and Gene were already there, so we sat down with them! They stayed until they finished their beers, then headed home.
I love hanging out with Kerri and Dave! They’re both such funny people, and they seem to fuel each other’s funny. I don’t ever laugh as hard as when I’m out with these two.
Before we left, the live music started. Here’s my favorite composition of the night.

Dinner and half of a movie
Cristin came over for dinner on Monday night for a Bowie movie-fest, sort of. I was thinking we’d watch the DVD commentary on Labyrinth, but instead we watched several of the “making of” docs.
And then I ran around for like an hour copying some CDs for her while she played on the computer and entertained the cats. And then we watched the first 30 minutes of The Hunger, which is not really very good, not to mention we watched the ancient VHS copy-of-a-copy I own that is very bad quality. But we got to see cute, young David Bowie in the shower scene, so woo-hoo for us! We were up too late but it was fun indeed!!
I made us dinner, sauteed chicken with a lemon-rosemary sauce served with rice and scalded green beans. Yummers!
And Cristin brought over some awesome and chocolatey ice cream cupcakes from Maggie Moo’s. I ate two because I am unstoppable.
And the cats seemed content to amuse us with their funny sleeping positions.

More Movie Reviews
Really enjoyed watching Waitress and Knocked Up this weekend.
It was really fun for Dave and I to watch two movies dealing with impending pregnancies.
Ah, and I love the Hal Hartley-esque dialogue and timing in Waitress.
Jenna: Cal, are you happy? I mean, when you call yourself a happy man, do you really mean it?
Cal: You ask a serious question, I’ll give you a serious answer: Happy enough. I don’t expect much. I don’t get much, I don’t give much. I generally enjoy whatever comes along. That’s my answer for you, summed up for your feminine consideration. I’m happy enough.
I wrote my final paper in my Film class in college about Hal Hartley. I got an A-. Later, I sent the paper to the publishing house to forward on to him, and I received a reply! He corrected/responded to some of the points I’d made in my paper and congratulated me for a job well done.
*Sigh* I might have to go watch Surviving Desire now.

Movie Reviews
Some movies we watched over the holiday weekend.
Fahrenheit 451
(1966)
Ah, Oskar Werner and Julie Christie. I remember watching this movie in Junior High after reading the book. In a generation, they’ll be able to watch the remake. Sad, they’ll miss out on all the wonderful campyness of the original.
Sadly, the dialogue is a bit tough to understand in some places because of the thick accents. But Oskar is a hottie! I like it. If you know me, you’d know I’d like it. I’d definitely recommend if you’re a sci-fi or bad movie buff like me. But if you can’t take high camp and you’re no fan of futuristic, dystopian tales, avoid.
I.Q.
(1994)
Adorable chick-flick style movie with no weeping involved. Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins are an oh-so-cute, if unlikely, couple. And even though the first time I saw Walter Matthau in his “Einstein” makeup I thought it very unrealistic, he had me thoroughly convinced of his character by the end of the movie. Really cute, PG movie. Plus, it has Stephen Fry in it! Recommend!
Benji
(1974)
I’d never seen this one before, so I kept expecting something really awful to happen. Nothing ever did! It’s amazing the pace of the movies made just 30 years ago. Audiences today would never put up with a very slow-paced movie with such a simpleplot line, I don’t think. We also wouldn’t put up with that horrible acting! I don’t say that because I didn’t like the movie – it was cute. But the acting was really bad. Is that because the actors themselves were bad, or because of sensibilities back when the movie was made? I don’t know. Anyway, would recommend as a family-friendly movie or for kids. Amazon has a nice review.
Stranger than Fiction
(2006)
*Sigh* I love Will Ferrell, and it’s so wonderful to see his depth of character in this movie. Dave and I both really liked Maggie Gyllenhaal in Happy Endings, and it was nice to see her again. Something about the romantic parts of the movie reminded me of Dave and I, too, so it was really fun to watch. I give this movie 5 stars! Plus, it has Tony Hale and Queen Latifah in it! Rent it this weekend if you haven’t already seen it!
Blades of Glory
(2007)
Inspired by our first Will Ferrell sighting, we watched this for a second time. Oh man, this movie is non-stop laugh-out-loud funny. Ferrell and Heder do a great job, and you gotta love the off-screen married couple of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler in some of the most fabulous costumes known to professional ice skating. If you haven’t seen this movie, rent it. Now. …What are you waiting for?

David Bowie Biography?
I think maybe Emma Thompson should play David Bowie in a movie about him.

Remember, Remember the Fifth of November
Yay!! Thanks to Kerri for accompanying me to the annual V for Vendetta showing at the Colony.
And then I saw this. Imagine my delight!
So of course, I got a picture!
There were three people in full costume and a few people just in masks. How come I didn’t know this was an annual event?!?!? Hello! Next year, same place, same time!
After the show, there was a short presentation by a few political activists: Ron Paul supporters, “9/11 is an inside job” folks, and some people who want to impeach the president. It was a cute tie-in to the movie, though I’m sure “cute” was not what they were going for.

V for Vendetta on Guy Fawkes Day!
If you want to join me, I’ll be watching V for Vendetta at 8 PM at the Colony in Raleigh. This movie is one of my faves and stars the sexy Hugo Weaving.
If you don’t like this movie, if you’re interested in criticizing or poking fun, do me a favor and don’t sit near me. This will be my fourth time seeing it in the theatre and I love it and don’t spoil it for me, ‘kay?
