We put the final coat on today, then peeled off all the tape, touched up all the trouble spots, and cleaned up. It looks great!!

Project 1: Kitchen Redo – In Progress

Filed under: Decorating — JeniQ @ 12:00 pm

As a reminder, there are two parts to the our project in the kitchen: the tile backsplash and some new paint. The subway tile backsplash is in! We selected a paint color – Roast Coffee won.

So now comes the hard part, to paint the walls, and that’s been our task this weekend. Saturday morning we spent prepping the kitchen for painting. Prep is definitely the longest and most tedious part of the project, and we took our time hoping to get every piece of trim, edge and corner just perfect. Then Dave moved the fridge all by himself because he’s awesome, and I did some last minute caulking behind the fridge. After that we draped everything in plastic and then we finally got to painting!

Chocolate vs. Soil vs. Coffee

Filed under: Decorating — JeniQ @ 11:46 am

We had two colors of brown on the walls in the kitchen as test swatches. After careful consideration of the two, I decided that a third color ought to be in the running. Friday night we picked up a quart of Roasted Coffee and added it in between the original swatches, Soul Chocolate and Gardener’s Soil.

Three Swatches

The Roast Coffee swatch won. It didn’t have the reddish tint of the Soul Chocolate, it’s a nice, straight-forward brown. But it has more richness and robust feeling than the Gardner’s Soil. Perfect!

Lord Royal Highness

Don’t forget to set your DVR to catch David Bowie on SpongeBob this weekend!
David Bowie as Lord Royal Highness

From BowieNet (October 5th):

Above is the very handsome and really rather important Lord Royal Highness, special guest star of upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants episode: SpongeBob’s Atlantis SquarePantis.

Apparently, when David Bowie was first shown preliminary sketches of LRH, he exclaimed: “That’s great, I wish I had dreamt up that look back in 1974!”.

One nod Lord Royal Highness makes to the real life Bowie is the subtle touch of one green eye and one blue, though, as David has been at pains to point out in the past, his are not actually different colours.

Anyway, we’ve been telling you about this episode since David Bowie first expressed his excitement in his online journal, (exactly a year ago) at being given the opportunity to voice the part of LRH. (10.05.2006 NEWS: SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS IN NEW BOWIE JOURNAL)

As you know, (05.21.2007 NEWS: ATLANTIS SQUARE PANTS TO AIR IN NOVEMBER) SpongeBob’s Atlantis SquarePantis airs on the eleventh of next month, (more detail of broadcast schedule nearer the time) with the DVD of this episode being made available, in North America at least, just two day later on the 13th.

Aside from the DVD there are already a couple of books available relating to this episode, (that’s one on the right, above) not to mention a plethora of games for pretty much every gaming platform, on sale from the end of the month.

As the man himself said in aforementioned journal: “Watch out. Or at least watch.”

While Dave was in Taiwan last week, the weather turned cold. I was doing so much work around the house that I didn’t feel the need to turn on the heat. However, when our guests arrived last weekend I decided it was time to kick on the heat, just to be decent hosts. That’s when we discovered the furnace isn’t working.

Dave called WeatherMaster on Monday but couldn’t get an appointment until today. This week, we’ve kept the gas fireplace on to keep it warm overnight, and we’re using a space heater in the bathroom for getting ready in the mornings. And thank goodness we have an electric mattress warmer!!

I hope the furnace guy can fix the problem today!

Working Dogs

Yesterday, when I left for work, this fun license plate was parked at my house.

Andy, from Working Dog Construction, was there to install our long-awaited tile backsplash in the kitchen. I am delighted! Look how good it turned out.

I love how industrial it looks. I’m hoping it will give us more cachet in the kitchen. 🙂 I especially love the way he brought the tile down to the floor alongside of both cabinets. Makes me want to tile the entire kitchen down to the floor!! but I’ll restrain myself.

I would highly recommend Andy for all your tile needs. He’s very easy to work with and loves cats and dogs. Check out his website, or get one of his cards from me.
