Of the four birds in our last clutch of bluebird eggs, one bird did not fledge and died in the nest. Dave was a good man and got rid of it. Bit of a sad note to end the breeding season on, but the bluebirds did have 14 successful chicks, so that’s not too shabby.

Was it smelly or more mummified? (I don’t know WHY, but I’m curious)

I don’t really know. I decided not to look/enquire. I think it was smelly.

It is really sad to see newborn chicks that don’t make it. Since you were getting video of them, I’m sure you got even more attached to them, seeing them everyday.
I tried hard to prepare for dead chicks on my end b/c the attrition rate is pretty high for chickens. If there’s a problem nature makes it so they either don’t hatch or die soon after. I felt bad for them but I also had 7 live chicks I had to take care of, so that helped.
